Chart of the quota of non-EU workers admitted to the Romanian labour market, from 5,500 in 2015 to the 30,000 proposed for 2019

The Government plans to raise the quota of migrant workers from outside the European area who can be admitted to the Romanian labour market from the 20,000 approved for this year to 30,000 people, according to a draft government decision on increasing the worker quota published on the website of the Ministry of Labour.

If the draft is adopted, the number of employees from outside the European area who can enter the Romanian labour market will rise from 15,000 last year to 30,000 this year. "In 2018, 10,923 applications for work permits were approved. The main countries of origin are: Vietnam (3,634), Turkey (1,488), Nepal (965). In the first 6 months of 2019, 12,695 work applications were approved.

The main countries of origin are: Vietnam (3,055), Moldova (1,437), Nepal (1,347)," representatives of the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) told ZF on request. In recent years, employers in hospitality, construction and even retail have brought in employees from Vietnam, Nepal and the Philippines to cover the shortage of staff caused by Romanian workers leaving the country. Employers say, however, that the number of permits granted by the authorities for workers from non-EU states is running out.
