Mihai Constantin, the Government spokesperson, announced on Friday 29 December that the cabinet meeting had approved a quota of 100,000 foreign workers to be admitted to the labour market in 2024. The same figure was approved for 2022.

"A quota of 100,000 workers newly admitted to the labour market in 2024 has been approved, foreign workers. It is a decision taken after consultations with the trade unions and the employers' associations, and it takes into account the assessment of the number of applications for work permits from the beginning of the year until now, as well as the number of vacancies declared by employers, particularly in the private sector," Mihai Constantin said after the cabinet meeting.

He specified that this ceiling is similar to the one in place for the current year, 2023, for which 80,375 approvals have been issued so far, with a further 9,748 applications still being processed for 2023.

"It is a number similar to that of 2022, around 100,000 for the current year. The same need has been assessed for next year. Even so, it is an increase on 2021, for example, when there were almost 50,000 such applications."
